"I broadly welcome the rapporteur’s report and agree that the development of the single market has delivered a range of benefits for Europe’s citizens, notably by providing consumers with a wider choice and lower prices, creating a dynamic business environment and enabling the free exchange of goods, services and ideas. This in turn has facilitated European integration across a range of areas and continues to underpin the EU’s ability to achieve its broad objectives.
However, I have reservations about particular elements of this report:
I do not agree that the introduction of a common consolidated tax base is either necessary or desirable, as suggested in this report. I believe that such a proposal, were it to be tabled by the Commission, would be a first step towards tax harmonisation, which I would find unacceptable. I believe that Member States are best placed to determine the nature and scope of their respective tax systems.
Finally, I believe that the report’s reference to nuclear power as an essential part of the EU’s energy mix is misplaced and I will not be supporting this element of the report."@en1
