".
The number of asylum seekers rises daily throughout the EU.
Many people’s desperation has led to tragic consequences.
It is vital for the EU to establish shared rules that will help prevent a repetition of such situations and will lay the foundations for mutual assistance between Member States, given that the pressures they face vary, often according to their geographical location.
The establishment of a common European asylum system should be based on three major axes: the introduction of a uniform procedure, the sharing of information about countries of origin and closer cooperation among the Member States in order to help those Member States that are under particular pressure. Close ties between the Member States’ authorities must therefore be encouraged, with the ultimate aim of improving the quality of the decision-making process, which needs to be quicker, fairer and more reliable. Only in this way will we be able to accomplish the goal of a common asylum system by 2010."@en1
