"Ladies and gentlemen, when we discuss the report on the labelling of alcohol, we should take into account not only the technical aspects and the need to ensure the transparency of the European market, but also the fact that the production and drinking of alcohol is often linked to local traditions and customs. European legislation should therefore not in any way restrict these traditions and customs and certainly not prohibit them. In my country, the Czech Republic is one of the traditional drinks. Maintaining traditional methods of producing is guaranteed under the country’s treaties of accession to the EU and should therefore not be undermined, certainly not by the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. I should therefore like to call on you, ladies and gentlemen, to support Amendment 144 tomorrow in the vote, and to rectify the mistake that has crept into the report. Please lend your support to this tradition, which is not just a Czech and Moravian drink, but also a wonderful European one."@en1
