"Mr President, getting rid of mines laid in Cyprus in 1974 in the buffer zone between the invading Turkish army and the defending Cypriot forces is a step towards peace. The process started approximately one year ago with the assistance of the EU. Minefields to which access was possible from the Cypriot-Government-controlled area have now been cleared, but demining in areas for which the Turkish army’s permission is necessary has not taken place because the generals in Ankara disagree. It is difficult to understand why Turkey, which has the second largest army in Europe after Russia, is afraid of tiny Cyprus.
Last Friday, the UN Security Council stated in recital 8 of a unanimous resolution extending the mandate of the UN force in Cyprus: ‘Regretting that demining activity in the buffer zone has stalled, welcoming the provision by the European Union of funds to support these activities, and urging the Turkish Forces and the Turkish Cypriot side to allow the resumption of demining activities’.
Mr President, could you please add your voice to that of the UN Security Council in urging the Turkish Government to allow the UN peacekeepers to proceed with their work of demining in the Cypriot buffer zone?"@en1
