"Mr President, the European press have recently reported that a powerful Russian nuclear bomb is located in Andreev Bay, 40km off the coast of Norway, and that this bomb could contaminate the northern reaches of our continent. The used uranium rods from Russian nuclear power stations that are being stored there could explode at any point, causing an environmental disaster the effects of which experts cannot even estimate.
This situation is the result of the inexplicable short-sightedness displayed by the Russian authorities and their contempt for matters relating to protecting the environment. In this respect, the attitude of President Putin’s government is a carbon copy of the approach often taken during the Soviet era.
There is no doubt that this environmental time-bomb, located at the bottom of Andreev Bay, needs to be immediately defused. The Member States of the European Union, in cooperation with Norway, should immediately begin intensive talks with the Russians and force them to take decisive action to secure the nuclear waste stockpiles. Europe cannot afford another Chernobyl."@en1
