"Mr President, this is a decisive period in WTO negotiations. The G4, that is the EU, the US, India and Brazil, are meeting in Potsdam for a number of days this week, and Commissioners Mandelson and Fischer Boel will also be in attendance. All of us wish to see an equitable deal negotiated, but it cannot be a deal at any price. If we make further concessions on agriculture, which is exactly what Commissioner Mandelson, going beyond his mandate, seems to be doing, then the future of agriculture in the EU is in jeopardy. I know that the CAP is not the most revered or loved policy in this Parliament, but we cannot dismantle it in one fell swoop and throw agriculture into crisis. What happens in Potsdam this week and at the General Affairs Council meeting next Monday will be crucial to the WTO negotiations. I am very concerned about the direction of these negotiations as spearheaded by Commissioner Mandelson. I call on Commissioner Fischer Boel to defend the interests of European agriculture and not to allow a sell-out. The undermining of EU agriculture will not benefit anybody."@en1
