"Mr President, in my opinion, needless cruelty to animals is still considered legitimate in the European Union. Therefore, a survey under my patronage on the establishment of a European Centre for the Protection and Welfare of Animals, based on an idea by Dr Ganzer and Dr Habersack, who are both active in the field of animal protection, and presented by Mr Moser, met with great support from the Members in the House when I presented it here on Wednesday. One thing this Centre envisages is the Europe-wide integration of animal-protection initiatives in order to take animal protection forward more effectively. The Centre will also be an instrument for the development of common standards to guide or be applied by Member States.
The activities of this Centre could also include the active exchange of information, the development of labelling, and scientific studies. Therefore, this event, attended by members of the Animal Welfare Intergroup and of
an animal-protection organisation in Styria – as well as European politicians, was an important step for the EU in the field of animal protection.
Mr President, I would ask that, with the help of this House, you support this idea and take it forward."@en1
