"Mr President, three weeks have now elapsed since the EU-Russia Summit in Samara, at which Poland once again refused to consent to the adoption of the Union’s mandate, a to opening negotiations on a new agreement. The reason was that Poland believes the Finnish proposals on support and involvement in resolving the trade dispute with Russia are inadequate. It has now become abundantly obvious that the Polish embargo is not just a problem for our country, but for the European Union as a whole. We are therefore pleased that the Union has strongly supported our decision, emphasising the value of the principle of solidarity. It should be borne in mind, however, that the embargo on Polish meat and plant products has now been in force for over 18 months, and that Polish entrepreneurs are those most affected. How long can such a situation be tolerated? Ongoing and intensified dialogue is essential for a successful resolution to the conflict. Failure to make any progress so far at a bilateral level indicates that the support of Union diplomats is needed to achieve a solution. The transition from theory to practice should be made at the earliest opportunity and a way out of this impasse must eventually be found. Unfortunately, the length of time elapsed suggests we are still treading water as far as this matter is concerned."@en1
