"I wish to salute the CGTP-IN union and the Portuguese workers on their great struggles for their rights, against constantly rising unemployment, against unstable work, which is spreading, for better salaries, which are among the lowest in the EU, and to which the Stability and Growth Pact has contributed.
The general strike that took place on 30 May was highly significant and opened the door for other struggles of which the European institutions should take note, at a time when the difficult economic situation and social inequality may soon be exacerbated by decisions in the pipeline, for example fresh interest rate rises by the European Central Bank, so-called flexicurity aimed at liberalising individual redundancies without good reason, and further liberalisations of public services.
The time has come for a change of policy, for people to be prioritised and for measures to be taken that offer respect and dignity to those who work."@en1
