I will abstain in the vote on this report mainly because the UK is not a part of the Schengen agreement and as such I should not be involved in determining policy in other Member States. However, I also recognise the difference in jurisprudence in the UK in contrast to other Member States. This issue of compatibility has broader implications and needs to be dealt with in an appropriate manner. I will be interested in the outcome of the court rulings on this issue. I recognise the positive aspect that this system will bring to security; however, the dangers are also relevant and need to be taken into account. Thus the broader implications of the Visa Information System make me hesitant to approve or denounce its implementation."@en1
