"Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, the issue of the free movement of people in the EU has been mentioned of late with increasing frequency. This certainly applies to the border crossings between the Czech Republic and Austria. It has become traditional for Austrian activists to organise blockades of border crossings and this happens with at least the tacit support of some of the Austrian authorities. These actions are intended as a protest against the Temelín nuclear power plant in the Czech Republic. Blocking traffic with this kind of demonstration is, in my view, in breach of European law and will certainly not help foster good neighbourly relations between the two Member States concerned. I respect the fact that some Austrian citizens are opposed to nuclear energy, but they have no right to promote their opinions in a way that restricts other people’s freedom. Some Austrian politicians are aware that the blockade of the border crossings are unacceptable and have distanced themselves from these actions. That is not enough, though. What is needed is to guarantee the right to freedom of movement. The EU should, to my mind, support the development of nuclear energy."@en1
