"I voted in favour of the report because I believe that the RABIT mechanism is necessary for coping with the extraordinary migratory pressure to which a number of EU Member States are periodically subject. RABIT has a voluntary basis and is not an attempt to build walls to shut out the surrounding world. I believe, rather, that it is important for the Member States to cooperate if they are effectively to combat trafficking in human beings and illegal people-smuggling, which often put at risk the lives of those who, in desperation, have been forced to leave their home countries. Thousands of people die each year in attempting to reach Europe in ways that are unsafe. RABIT is part of the work designed to prevent people from dying in the hands of cynical people-smugglers. As a Social Democrat, I am working to achieve a generous and humane refugee policy and want to increase people’s opportunities for finding their way to Europe legally."@en1
