"Mr President, the missile defence shield threatens to create a new Iron Curtain and therefore provides no guarantee of international peace and security. In fact, it could lead to an escalation of existing conflicts throughout the world. We must not start a new arms race: the missile shield is there to protect the United States, first and foremost.
If anyone were to ask me whether we should defend peace and defend the USA from terrorists, for example, my response would be yes. But the missile defence shield raises many questions. We cannot allow new divisions to be created in Europe and we must search for a peaceful compromise, rather than conflict, with Russia.
I have addressed the Polish Government on this issue on numerous occasions proposing a public debate on the issue in Poland and in Europe. However, the current right-wing Polish Government is sticking to its anti-European and less than constructive guns, as it did with the Constitutional Treaty. In spite of the fact that the European Union is not a defence alliance, it should be publicly clarified whether the issue of the missile defence system should be subject to joint political decisions made by the EU and NATO."@en1
