"Mr President, it is clear that the European Union’s foreign policy may experience some tensions in 2007. However, the reason for these tensions is not the missile defence shield programme itself. The problem lies in the fact that certain Member States have taken the Russian view on this issue. Russia is intentionally using false arguments. It is clear that ten intercepting stations on Polish territory pose no threat to Russia's defences. Contrary to what has been suggested, consultations with Russia have been, and still are, taking place. By using these false arguments, Russia clearly only wants to cause divisions within the European Union. Paradoxically, locating components of the shield in Europe may only speed up the implementation of similar NATO plans in this field. This would prove to be an unintended, but very beneficial, outcome. Poland will be as open to these kinds of initiatives as it is today. That is why I am so surprised that the German SPD – former Chancellor Schröder’s party – is so keen to repeat the arguments used by President Putin on this issue. It would be more natural for the Social Democrats to listen to their European Union partners from Denmark, the Czech Republic, Great Britain and Poland."@en1
