"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, when leaving Bergamo for Brussels by plane, I met a delegation composed of 27 widows, one for each of the states in the European Union, protesting that the survivor’s pensions paid to widows of pensioners and workers are only half the pensions that their spouses received.
The widows asked me to raise this issue at the European Parliament – as I am doing – and were certain that their request would be heard by all 27 governments making up the European Union. They hope that a European pension will at last be introduced to provide equal, better rights for all European citizens, and this is something I also call for."@en1
