Those of us who have had the privilege to serve on our parliamentary delegation for relations with the United States have worked for many years to seek to achieve good relations. It would be unfortunate if a report such as this – which may make good headlines but which, it has to be said, carries little substance – was to undermine that work. While this is not a legislative report, surely we still have a responsibility to take a water-tight legislative approach. Stating that there may have been secret bases or that certain names coincide with media reports does not satisfy such a legislative approach. When we decide to look into an issue of such public interest, we have a responsibility to ensure that we are contributing to establishing the truth surrounding it rather than falling into the trap of fuelling speculation."@en1
