"Mr President, in 2005 the Lisbon Strategy, which was once described as a load of wishful thinking, was adapted to reflect the real priorities of the societies of Member States of the Union. From the verbiage contained in the mountain of documents on this subject, we can glean some challenges which we now have to face urgently. These are, firstly, to ensure security of energy supplies for the whole of Europe, rather than just for selected countries. Encouraging the use of renewable sources of energy comes under the same heading. Secondly, to remove the barriers that still exist concerning the free movement of labour within the European Union and to constantly monitor implementation of this principle by individual Member States. This will help prevent workers from countries other than the employer’s from being treated unfairly, or even as slaves. Finally, the European Union must also reject the completely outdated idea of trying to compete against the United States, and replace it with close and sound partnership."@en1
