". Since 11 September, aeroplanes are no longer just a means of transport; they can also be the means to make an attempt on the lives of countless numbers of people. That is why new – more restrictive – security measures have been implemented in airports, and I fully endorse the process under way. Nevertheless, attacks on the freedom to travel should remain proportionate. Thus, while I support the bulk of the measures taken, I remain sceptical about the restrictions on liquids in aircraft cabins and about the way in which they have been decided. Indeed, these measures cause a great deal of bother and many drawbacks in practice for people who travel, and they are not proven to be effective, so different are they from one State to another, and even from one airport to another. Moreover, the MEPs, as elected representatives, were informed of the implementation of these measures only after they had been decided upon. I am perfectly aware that some information cannot be divulged because of its highly strategic nature where the fight against terrorism is concerned, but I believe that we should be more involved in the decision-making process."@en1
