"Mr President, for many people climate change has only become a reality now that its cost has been estimated. According to one estimate, the cost of doing nothing could be as much as 20% of GNP globally. If we take action now, however, and halt climate change at two degrees, the cost will be a fraction of that. Moreover, investment in the low-emission economy will create a global market for energy-efficient technologies which is forecast to grow to a value of up to EUR 27 billion by 2020.
For Europe to be part of this technological development, the Union needs to create a viable domestic market for renewable, low-emission forms of energy. We have to remember that nuclear energy cannot be the answer to this problem, especially if we want Europe to be a self-sufficient energy economy."@en1
