"Mr President, the biggest threat to European welfare societies is unemployment. We cannot fight unemployment with more regulations and more legislation, because the problem of unemployment today is not the lack of social regulations in Europe or the lack of legislation. The problem is that we have a lack of employers. The problem is that we have a lack of competitiveness, investments and innovations.
The fact is, Madam Federal Chancellor – and please excuse my German as I say this – that the problem in Europe is not only that there are people who lack jobs, but that there is also a lack of enterprise and a lack of entrepreneurs – phenomena for which, I know, there are no words in German.
... and not in Swedish or English, either – and maybe that is the problem.
I would urge you to launch an initiative for deregulation and better regulation. Not all deregulation is better regulation, but we can achieve better regulation by deregulation. That is the way to fight unemployment, Mr Schulz, not by more regulation. I wish you all good luck."@en1
