"I am glad to note that Mr Stubb has made a rapid career move from the back benches to the front benches here. That is impressive and remarkable.
I want to tell you that we are continuing to analyse developments in the labour markets in the European Union and all the evidence shows that those countries that have applied a liberal practice of receiving workers from the new Member States, such as the United Kingdom and Ireland, have benefited in terms of overall economic growth and better functioning of the labour market. Therefore we can continue to argue the case so that we have positive benchmarks, like those two countries and other countries such as the Member State you know best. After we have argued the case, then it is the prerogative of each and every Member State; and of course we have to trust the judgement of each and every national government, because they should know best the circumstances in the country and what is best for the country and its citizens."@en1
