"Mr President, I voted in favour of adopting the modified version of the draft Services Directive. In other words, I was against rejecting it. I am generally an optimist, and that is why I think that it will contribute to cutting red tape, increasing economic growth and creating new jobs. Let us be honest, however, and admit that the original version of the Directive, put forward by the European Commission three years ago, was much better and could have made a better contribution to achieving the aims of the Lisbon Strategy. The current directive has been significantly watered down and it is difficult to describe it as a great success. It seems that some old Member States are afraid of the free provision of services and of competition with new Member States, using fear of social dumping as a justification. This attitude is difficult to comprehend, as I imagine that we all want Europe to become more competitive and dynamic."@en1
