"As an MEP from one of the new Member States, I have fought hard for the rights of our businesses and our workers, and have put questions to the Commission on several occasions both orally and in writing concerning the protection and respect of workers’ rights. In the process, we have often come up against legal, political and economic problems. We have frequently been accused of social dumping, of lowering the standards for safety in the workplace and other similar absurdities. By now the majority of the issues – including the SoKo Bunda and Pannonia affairs involving Hungarian workers in Germany – have been resolved, court decisions have stopped the German authorities’ action and there are even lawsuits for damages underway. The acceptance of the Services Directive today is a giant step in the direction of clarifying the various uncertainties. It is a compromise, which means no one is really fully satisfied, but it is a good compromise that will advance our cause, namely the achievement of the fundamental freedoms of our Union, the free movement of services."@en1
