". The Commission is seeking to amend Regulation EEC No 2092/91, currently in force, which lays down rules on the import of organic products, with a view to tightening up the procedure for the recognition of imported organic products. It falls short, however, of what is required. Hence the series of amendments tabled by the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development with the aim of protecting both consumers and producers at national level. Consequently, emphasis has been placed on the need to control products imported from third countries, in order to ensure that the product has been obtained in accordance with production standards equivalent to those applied to organic production in the Community, and that this is reciprocated. It would not be fair for EU farmers and consumers if third country produce did not have to undergo the same checks as those faced by EU farmers. The competent national authorities, moreover, must at least be involved in the process of recognising third-country control bodies. The fight against fraud will only be effective if there is control and recognition on the part of the national authorities of the importing countries."@en1
