". I voted against the Eurlings Report because I remain resolutely opposed to non-European Turkey obtaining membership of the EU. Those who claim that movement towards membership will induce Turkey into full democratic and human rights compliance are shown, even by the lack of appreciable progress conceded by this report, to be lamentably wrong. On reform, human rights, religious freedom, Cyprus, Armenia we have obtained nothing, but in return we have wasted, and will continue to waste, millions on pre-accession aid. Not for the first time, the EU is being taken for a ride. The EU's lust for endless enlargement is driven by a craving for ego-building world status, which goes hand in hand with the drive for super-statehood through the rejected Constitution. Turkey's membership, even wider enlargement and the Constitution are all part of the same grand design."@en1
