"Mr De Rossa, in its discussion on the case, the Commission held to the view that was stated before the court and on which the court gave its ruling. From this perspective we are both formally and substantively involved in the trial in question. Accordingly, the Commission is responsible for resolving this matter and for examining whether the ruling has been applied in full, whether it has resulted in retrospective payment and whether careers have been renewed. This is what we have to do and this is the direction in which we are heading. How the proposed measures will turn out remains to be seen. In my view, the bottom line is that the legal framework of the EU and the European Community must be respected, and this is the way the Commission always works. It made its position on the matter very clear during the negotiations."@en1
