"Mr President, our European Union exists because it is firmly based on strict adherence to our European principles and values. Those principles and values are not negotiable and that must be clearly understood by all those who belong to the EU and by those wishing to join. Turkey is welcome to join our Union and I very much hope that it does, but it must accept and abide by our European principles and values. It is Turkey that must achieve the required accession changes, not us, and we must be honest in making our position clear to Turkey. We should not try to trick Turkey into joining the EU. Turkey must do so only if it really wants to and in full awareness of exactly what is demanded of it. The Eurlings report makes that clear, firmly and honestly. The Eurlings report is the result of much discussion and debate and many compromise amendments have been voted in by the Committee on Foreign Affairs, finally achieving a much-desired balance. Please support it and resist attempts to introduce any amendments on key issues at this stage, which is likely to cause more harm than good. Let me remind some of my colleagues that we will bring about reforms in Turkey by telling the Turkish people the truth and not hiding the truth from them."@en1
