"Mr President, I oppose this proposal for two reasons. Firstly, why would we not say something about ASEM? For the first time in years, there has been a successful ASEM Summit. We used to complain about things going wrong but, finally, we have done something well. Let us speak out about the improvement in economic ties with Asia. It is an important issue and it gives us the opportunity to discuss the promotion of democracy and speak out against the continued use of capital punishment in Asian countries. There is another reason. This is our only opportunity this week to speak out about the military coup in Thailand. That event should be on all our minds. A military coup is the wrong way to get rid of even such an unsavoury character as Prime Minister Thaksin: it is not the way to go about it, and this Parliament cannot remain silent. We have to speak out on this issue, whether it is you as President, the Conference of Presidents or, preferably, this House as a whole. I therefore oppose having the debate without a resolution."@en1
