". I respect the national legislation of my country, Slovakia, the will of my constituents and my own personal conscience. This is why I did not support the legislative resolution. Respect for human life and for the integrity of women is sacrosanct. It is irresponsible to provide Research Framework Programme funding for projects that exploit women’s ova or that destroy the human embryo. The Framework Programme funds research that is banned in several Member States, including Slovakia, with Slovak taxpayers’ money. Is it not a lie to pretend that the EU, and in particular the Commission, respects the diversity and sovereignty of the Member States when it is prepared to fund illegal projects? Whilst the Community budget is short of meeting our daily needs, why throw taxpayers’ money down the drain on research that will never have any tangible benefit? This is why the Committee on Legal Affairs, and the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality, of which I am a Member, have called for an end to the funding or cofinancing of research that is illegal in some Member States or that involves destroying human embryos, human cloning, the exploitation of women to obtain their ova, the manipulation of germ lines for the purpose of eugenics and the creation of hybrid cells such as chimeras."@en1
