"I should like to join in the congratulations on Mr Ó Neachtain’s excellent report and his consistent commitment on this issue that is so close to our hearts. I should like to say that inshore fishing is a concept that should be defined in terms of its economic, social, environmental and technical aspects, as well as the geographical reality to which it applies. In this regard, I should like to draw the attention of the Commission and of the Members of this House to the reality of life in outermost regions such as the Azores and Madeira, where there are no continental shelves and where the coastal equivalent is effectively the coastal banks, which are sometimes a long way from the islands, but which to all intents and purposes represent exactly what the coast close to the land represents for other continental situations. This is extraordinarily important to us because if this adaptation does not take place, we will not be able to understand the real situation in these regions. I would therefore strongly urge the Commission to take this into consideration."@en1
