"Mr President, we should take this opportunity and, at the same time as acknowledging the rise in racism, xenophobia, homophobia or any other kind of oppression, we should avoid putting a premature end to the discussion by stating that it should not be taking place at all. Instead, we should think about the reasons for this increase, for it is this kind of reflection that has been lacking in this House.
There are a number of groups other than those mentioned today which are also oppressed. I think that all Europeans in the European Union are being oppressed by having enlargement, in the form of Turkey’s accession to the EU, forced upon them. Another oppressed group is that part of society which has a traditional Christian outlook, which does not have anything against homosexuals but which is shocked by gay parades. Why are parades necessary? They are also a form of oppression."@en1
