".
Mr President, I voted against this motion for a resolution
because the German police took unprecedented action today against citizens of the Czech Republic. The police refused entry into Germany for dozens of football fans who wanted to attend the 2006 football World Cup. In my view, this runs counter to both the free movement of persons in the EU and the Treaty of Maastricht. I believe that a number of my fellow Members will join me in asking the German Government to explain how it is possible that it can trample underfoot the basic principles of the EU's existence. I have already submitted questions to the Commission and the Council in this connection.
