"I should like to highlight a few points. The first is the importance of research to the success of the Lisbon Strategy. Secondly, it is necessary to carry out and extend research into climate change and its impact on natural disasters. Research must also be carried out into solving the energy problem. In spite of all the controversy, embryonic stem cell research is a highly promising area of research that has yielded very encouraging results in terms of treating diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, which would not have been possible simply with adult stem cells or those from the umbilical cord. I therefore welcome the consensus proposal tabled by Mrs Gutiérrez and Mr Busquin and call on the Members of this House to support it."@en1
