". On issues relating to the labour market, I strongly condemn the glaring inequalities between men and women in a number of areas such as pay, access to employment, vocational training, working conditions and career development. I voted in favour of this report because it represents a step forward in implementing the principle of equal opportunities and equal treatment of men and women in matters of employment and occupation. A further reason for my support for the report is that more initiatives need to be adopted to help people achieve a better balance between work and private life. The act of bringing together in one sole document the various initiatives on equal treatment will serve to simplify the existing legal framework. Furthermore, the level of protection will be stepped up in that the development of the case-law of the European Court of Justice will become incorporated. I regret, however, that in spite of the fact that equal treatment is enshrined in the EU Treaty and in various directives, it remains an unfulfilled dream, no more than a vague political principle with a level of implementation that leaves a great deal to be desired."@en1
