".
I voted against the Mavromatis report () on promoting multilingualism and language learning in the EU because in a Europe based on coexistence between communities, it is crucial that the citizens have the necessary skills to be able to communicate effectively with one another, thereby strengthening mobility in the EU. It is wrong to confer privileged status on certain languages, without other factors being taken into account.
The creation of a ‘multilingual’ society, in which every citizen has the opportunity to learn at least two languages other than their mother tongue will help to foster closer ties between citizens of different EU Member States. It is also important, however, that this is not done at the cost of devaluing national languages."@en1
