". Ladies and gentlemen, this is yet another display of intolerance between two states that we respect but that fail to respect each other. An attack on a prison and on political prisoners is never regarded as acceptable anywhere, nor has it ever been in history. Even political prisoners have the right to be in prison without being exposed to the threat of extra-judicial judgments. Today’s assault on the prison reminds me in a way of the enforcement of just such a judgment. Naturally, this event will provoke further reactions and tensions on both sides, leading to what might be described as a ‘never-ending story’. I was truly looking forward to today’s speech of the Palestinian President in this House, at the press conference and during our joint lunch, and I expected to learn about the vision that Palestine intends to bring to the negotiating table in the hope of securing peace for the citizens of that part of the world. I was hoping, and perhaps expecting, the European Parliament to assume the role of mediator. It is my devout wish that we might offer assistance in this way, since both sides now need peace at last."@en1
