"Mr President, in a few days we will decide on the fate of the Services Directive. That will be a crucial test of whether the EU is taking the Lisbon agenda at its face value, because the services sector is a main reservoir for rapid economic growth. However, today the giant of the enlarged EU is like Gulliver in Lilliput, his immense potential tied up by innumerable cords of protectionist regulations.
Our challenge is to dismantle the complex network of anti-competitive practices, which is undermining confidence in genuine European integration. Our responsibility this week is to open up the services sector to free and fair competition. The new Member States are not a threat to the EU internal market, but an asset. Therefore, compromises on the Services Directive should not serve to block the dynamics of this important change."@en1
