I welcome today's vote on this issue, and especially Parliament's overwhelming commitment to treating same-sex partners with equality of respect.
I very much regret Parliament's unwillingness to say what is going on within our own Member States. We know that what Parliament says and does affects public perceptions.
Recent events and statements in Poland and parliamentary debates in Latvia and Lithuania have been shameful in my view. Some of the debates have amounted to hate speak. This sort of behaviour runs counter to Council of Europe Conventions and EU Treaties, so the European Parliament should be brave enough to speak out and confront this."@en1
