The EU must maintain a clear and consistent position in defence of democracy, the rule of law and human rights, in relation to what ought to be, in the broadest sense, the Middle East peace process. In this particular case, the steps that have been taken in Lebanon require our effective support both in word and in deed. In practice, we need to work together on any leads that may uncover the truth behind the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri. I therefore voted in favour of the report before us.
