".
Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, the difficulties faced by disabled persons – those with a sensory or physical incapacity – on flights could have filled whole books. We knew of and were familiar with these difficulties. In fact, it is a sad reflection of a society that it has to pass its own directive to clear the obstacles to the journeys of people who are disadvantaged enough in their lives as it is.
I should like to thank my colleague Mr Evans. He has done a tremendous job, and we enjoyed a marvellous working relationship. I should also like to thank the organisations representing disabled persons, which stood by our side and gave us good tips. In addition, I wish to ask the Member States to drive the implementation and entry into force of this directive forward as quickly as possible at airports, in particular, and make it a real Christmas present."@en1
