"On 30 November, the Commission unveiled its proposals for fishing quotas and attendant measures for 2006, within the framework of the common fisheries policy, to be adopted by the end of the year. The Commission announced the objective of introducing, as far as possible, a gradual approach to the recovery of fish stocks that allows fishermen to pursue their activities. The Commission’s proposals for reducing the fishing effort do not, however, include any assessment of the economic and social costs to fishermen.
The fisheries sector, particularly in Portugal, has already been severely hit by, among other factors, the increase in fuel prices. I therefore call for Community-level measures to be implemented in order to safeguard the future of the sector, not least because this is a common policy for supporting the income of fishermen, in particular those involved in small-scale coastal fishing."@en1
