"I would like to urge my fellow Members to support this motion, which will hopefully encourage the Slovak Government and the Slovak Interior Ministry to reconsider the position taken by the Minister in respect of the fundamental values and rights of the European Union. The Slovak Government has demoted the President of the Police Federation and has unilaterally declared that it no longer recognises this body as a negotiating partner. It has also threatened disciplinary measures against police officers that participate in any kind of protest in pursuit of better living or working conditions. Ladies and gentlemen, President Borrell, the Slovak Republic joined the European Union in 2004 also because it perceives the European Union as a guarantor of fundamental rights and values. I therefore urge you that we, as members of the European Parliament, demonstrate our respect for the binding nature of these rights and obligations."@en1
