". Quite apart from all of the questions raised by the report on the Code of Conduct on Arms Exports, I feel that the ban on arms exports to China is, yet again, the key point, and is ample justification for me to vote in favour. My opinion has been and continues to be that the EU must persevere with its embargo because it is, more than anything, a stand taken by the 25 Member States in defence of human rights, the international order and peace. China is and will continue to be a major player on the international stage and a vital economic partner of the EU. I feel that one of the ways in which democracy and respect for human rights can be promoted is to develop the Chinese market. Yet this is not a path that can be followed unconditionally, and this is where the arms embargo comes in. We will be China’s economic partners, but tough partners committed to building a better world."@en1
