". The increasingly globalised world of today faces new challenges to which European society must respond. The only solution is to support education and lifelong learning. This agenda must be considered a high priority for the European Union; without this support, it will not be possible to attain the Lisbon Strategy objective of becoming a competitive knowledge-based economy. I supported Mr Bono’s report stressing the importance of education not only at a young age, but also throughout life. I appreciate the views of the rapporteur on the role of universities in this process. By fostering cooperation and teacher and student exchanges, we contribute to synergies in the area of research as well as to the strengthening of a European identity. At the same time, we must realise that the creation of a knowledge-based economy and society will not be possible without adequate financial support. I see an opportunity for the EU to prove its resolve in this area at the European level. In the new financial climate, it will be necessary to negotiate the highest possible budget for education and for supporting the mobility of students, trainees, teachers and researchers. Only through mutual cooperation can we succeed in keeping pace with increasing international competition."@en1
