"We approve of the initiative taken by the Council concerning the retention of telecommunication data for the purpose of giving the law enforcement authorities better tools in the fight against serious crime and terrorism. Experience in Sweden shows that telecommunication data has been important in many serious crime investigations. We therefore support the Council’s proposal in principle. The proposal presented by the Commission on 21 September 2005 concerning the retention of telecommunication data opens the way for a debate on combating crime. The Commission’s proposal would give the European Parliament influence. We therefore chose to abstain in today’s vote in anticipation of a new position being adopted."@en1
