"I believe it is of the greatest importance that the EU’s agricultural policy, including the organisation of the market for raw tobacco, should be reformed. The present system costs a lot of money. What is more, today’s high agricultural subsidies mean that EU products are dumped on the world market, a state of affairs that has serious consequences for developing countries.
Today, the European Parliament has voted on changing the regulation on the common organisation of the market for raw tobacco. I chose to vote in favour, since the change means that the reform of the raw tobacco market, which has already begun, can continue. I do not believe that the EU should support tobacco cultivation. As a consequence, I welcome the continued reforms whereby half the total aid to the tobacco sector (EUR 484 million) will, as from 2010, be set aside for restructuring programmes in the tobacco-producing regions, and this within the framework of rural development."@en1
