".
Portugal has benefited considerably in recent years from the European Regional Development Fund. At national level, we might take issue with some – or indeed a large number – of the priorities set by the different governments for the use of these funds, and can demonstrate our disappointment at the eventual impact, given that we deserve more and better. Nonetheless, we must recognise the enormously positive effect that this fund has had on Portugal and must focus on the rules that will apply to it in times ahead. Accordingly, I endorse the priorities expressed in this report, such as that of ensuring that these funds are distributed more fairly, in such a way that past and future enlargements do not undermine the least developed regions and countries of the EU. Particular attention should also be paid to ‘statistical wealth’, which is not real wealth and should not be treated as such."@en1
