"Madam President, I have three short observations to make on the software patents directive.
Firstly, it is better for us not to have any directive at all than to have a bad directive. Secondly, this was a clear sign of an interinstitutional power struggle, in which the Commission and the Council ought to have listened to Parliament and followed suit. Thirdly, the whole debate was riddled with misunderstandings, and I hope that the Commission will not at this stage simply give up, but put a new proposal on the table, because at some stage we will also need a European software patents directive."@en1
