". There are 352 million children working in the world, 179 million of whom are victims of what the International Labour Organisation defines as the worst forms of child labour. We cannot turn a blind eye to this situation. We all know that this is a complex phenomenon rooted in social and economic problems that are difficult to solve. Complex and enormously difficult though the situation is, we cannot turn our backs on it or block measures that may lead to an effective strategy to break the cycle of human misery. Child labour perpetuates poverty and hampers development. It drives salaries down, causes unemployment among adults and prevents children from receiving an education. It is therefore of crucial importance that we combat ignorance and promote the development of education for all. Education is without doubt one of the most effective tools at our disposal to break the cycle of poverty, and one of the key elements in sustainable human development. These are the reasons why I voted in favour of the Mavrommatis report."@en1
