With its information and communication strategy with regard to the euro and economic and monetary union, the EU has one objective, which is to ‘sell’ the euro, in other words to invest more money in the European propaganda machine in the form of the PRINCE ‘information’ campaigns, aimed at convincing the citizens of what are seen as the benefits of the euro.
Consequently, we reject this report unequivocally, because it is based on the principle that the euro has been positive and beneficial. It even considers that this has been the most successful of the European projects. What is more, it stresses that the popularity of the euro is crucial to the future ratification of the so-called ‘European Constitution’.
This suggests that the European institutions are unaware of the growing opposition to the euro among the citizens. They base their views on the idea that, if the people are opposed to it, then that is because they are ill-informed or, better still, because they are out of touch with reality. Such is the arrogance and the blinkeredness of those who claim to represent the citizens. They disregard the fact that the economic and employment situation is worsening, and overlook macro-economic issues, as though a single monetary policy could address the different needs of 25 economies. They also act as though the objective of this policy were neutral, when in fact the primary aim is to reduce salaries in real terms. We must take stock of the costs of the euro, which is hampering sustainable development."@en1
